FAQs

Below are answers to some common questions. If you still have questions please get in touch with our team via the contact box and we will endeavour to answer them!

  • Over 2/3’s of the artists who have designed murals are based in Sussex . We have also worked with local crew where possible to assist with painting the murals.

  • There has been a lot of outreach and consultation, from the initial open public meeting in Summer 2023 at the Hillcrest Centre, to meetings and presentations to local champions and local business, as well as workshops and assemblies at the local schools and colleges.

  • Sites were chosen for many reasons, the first of which was that we wanted to create a trail that takes visitors and residents through the town and to some of the lesser known gems, including the cat wall and the beginning of the Egrets Way.

We also chose spaces that needed a bit of love and attention, or some that were key in greeting people as they arrive in the town.

  • Community is at the core of Look Again and over the last year the project has run events for residents, funded a youth collective for 14-25 year olds, and provided free workshops for Seahaven Academy students and Newhaven’s four primary schools.

We also visited ESCG in Lewes, and included their student artwork with our paste up gallery, and are working with Hospitable Environment and Talent Accelerator, who employ local young people in arts based roles.

  • The artworks will be on permanent display across Newhaven. When they become tired and old we will maybe add something new! Watch this space!

  • Feedback from similar events across the world is that murals actively deter graffiti, decrease tagging and criminal damage.

However, in our opinion graffiti and tagging are both a result of bored young people expressing themselves.

We would love to see more creative services offered for young people in the town, and would happily connect any young people who are serious about a career in street art with our artists as work placements or shadowing.

  • No - this project has been paid for with Levelling Up funds from Central Government.

As a team of local residents we would also love to see the potholes fixed, but sadly this comes from road tax, which is another department entirely!

  • The short answer is no. In the short term the Levelling Up Funds will be used to maintain and repair these murals.

  • Many things are happening as a knock-on effect of the festival, including the installation of new lighting in both underpasses and on St. Lukes Lane; the cleaning of graffiti and tags from across the town; the cleaning of the old time capsule, and the landscaping of many green sites across the town. The mural festival is part of a much bigger regeneration plan.
