About Look Again?
Public artworks bring great value to the culture of the town, inspiring joy and pride, changing perceptions, encouraging visitors, and uplifting local businesses. Newhaven residents had shared which areas they wanted to see painted, and an open public meeting helped to gather feedback and ideas from locals.
Community was at the core of Look Again. Alongside brightening up the town, we ran a programme of events for residents and visitors, provided free workshops for Newhaven’s four primary schools and Seahaven Academy, and funded a youth collective for 14-25 year olds.
Our events were completely oversubscribed, and enjoyed by all, with so many people from the surrounding towns helping us to celebrate this amazing town.
This project was funded by generous sponsors, charitable grants, investment from central government, and was delivered by Lewes District Council.
In June 2024, the coastal town of Newhaven, East Sussex, hosted a month of events, workshops, walks, and community gatherings to accompany 15 specially commissioned artworks that were installed across the town.
Some of the biggest names in graphic art, illustration, and street art created murals for the Look Again Supergraphics Festival in June. Artists included Anthony Burrill, Annie Frost Nicholson, Amber Elise, Supermundane, Eelus, and See Creatures.
The artworks were designed to represent the community, local landscape, nature, and history of Newhaven. During the festival, blank walls and neglected streets were transformed into spaces of colour and creativity. Look Again aimed to bring joy and inspiration to the town’s residents and encouraged visitors to reassess the industrial town they may have previously overlooked.

The events are now over, but the main murals will be in place for many years to come.
To help assist visitors to the town, we have created a handy map of the artworks.

What are
Supergraphics?
“It is one of the most under-appreciated, short-lived, yet fascinating genres of 20th century design.”
Adrian Shaughnessy
Supergraphics are large scale graphics, typography or imagery used to enhance large surfaces like walls or ceilings. The concept was originally explored by American designer Barbara Stauffacher Solomon (1928-2024) in the 1960s when she mixed large scale abstractions with hard edge Swiss graphics.
The world of public art, murals and large scale graphics has evolved since the 1960s, and with every evolution we have seen a change of aesthetics and purpose. For this event we require that the artworks are not only decorative, but also serve the purpose of improving the location in some way, the very existence of a mural can change how safe people feel, or can create natural wayfinding elements, or can create inspiration in spaces where people congregate.
